Technology is basically the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications, whether in industry or in our everyday lives. So, whenever we use our scientific knowledge to achieve some specific purpose, we’re using technology. Technology usually involves a specific piece of equipment to mitigate the desirable needs. There are various types of technologies starting from medical, electronics, mechanical, information, communication , construction, business and many more which solely uses knowledge that are put into practical use to solve problems or invent useful tools. Thus, the purpose of technology is to enable the effective sharing of data to address some of society’s biggest challenges and help individuals and organizations be more innovative, efficient, and productive.
In this challenging globalized world with increased efficiency of technology, I as a student from an interdisciplinary engineering branch get more attracted and engrossed to deal with IoT (Internet of Things) and undoubtedly this is my favourite technology as I am able to connect it from any domain of spectrum ranging from medical , electronics etc.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interconnected digital devices, machines, objects, animals or people provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transmit and share data over the network without the need of human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. It refers to the connecting of all devices irrespective of any domain and adding sensors them adds a level of digital intelligence to devices that are enabling them to communicate real time data without involving a human being . The term IoT is mainly used for devices that wouldn’t usually be generally expected to have an internet connection, and that can communicate with the network independently of human action.The Internet of Things is making the fabric of the world around us more smarter and more responsive, merging the digital and physical universes. A thing in the internet of things can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm animal with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the driver when tire pressure is low or any other natural or man-made object that can be assigned an Internet Protocol (IP) address and is able to transfer data over a network.
Increasingly, organizations in a variety of industries are using IoT to operate more efficiently, better understand customers to deliver enhanced customer service, improve decision-making and increase the value of the business.An IoT ecosystem consists of web-enabled smart devices that use embedded systems, such as processors, sensors and communication hardware, to collect, send and act on data they acquire from their environments. IoT devices share the sensor data they collect by connecting to an IoT gateway or other edge device where data is either sent to the cloud to be analyzed or analyzed locally. Sometimes, these devices communicate with other related devices and act on the information they get from one another. The devices do most of the work without human intervention, although people can interact with the devices — for instance, to set them up, give them instructions or access the data.The connectivity, networking and communication protocols used with these web-enabled devices largely depend on the specific IoT applications deployed.
IoT can also make use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to aid in making data collecting processes easier and more dynamic. The internet of things helps people live and work smarter, as well as gain complete control over their lives. In addition to offering smart devices to automate homes, IoT is essential to business. IoT provides businesses with a real-time look into how their systems really work, delivering insights into everything from the performance of machines to supply chain and logistics operations. IoT also enables companies to automate processes and reduce labor costs. Generally, IoT is most abundant in manufacturing, transportation and utility organizations, making use of sensors and other IoT devices; however, it has also found use cases for organizations within the agriculture, infrastructure and home automation industries, leading some organizations toward digital transformation.
IoT can benefit farmers in agriculture by making their job easier. Sensors can collect data on rainfall, humidity, temperature and soil content, as well as other factors, that would help automate farming techniques.
The ability to monitor operations surrounding infrastructure is also a factor that IoT can help with. Sensors, for example, could be used to monitor events or changes within structural buildings, bridges and other infrastructure. There are innumerable advantages of using IoT that mainly include : access information, communication, Cost-effective, automation, privacy & security, complexity, lesser employment and dependability. The benefits of the IoT for business depend on the particular implementation; agility and efficiency are usually top considerations.
The idea is that enterprises should have access to more data about their own products and their own internal systems, and a greater ability to make changes as a result. IoT devices generate vast amounts of data; that might be information about an engine’s temperature or whether a door is open or closed or the reading from a smart meter. All this IoT data has to be collected, stored and analysed. There are many competing platforms and standards and many different vendors, from device makers to software companies to network operators, want a slice of the pie. It’s still not clear which of those will win out. But without standards, and with security an ongoing issue, we are likely to see some more big IoT security mishaps in the next few years.
As the number of connected devices continues to rise, our living and working environments will become filled with smart products – assuming we are willing to accept the security and privacy trade-offs. Some will welcome the new era of smart things. Others will pine for the days when a chair was simply a chair.
Thus, IoT is one of the essential and emerging technologies which will grow its demand day by day. Every single individual will get benifitted and this technology will emerge glorious in days to come.
